Very odd.  I'm using Ubuntu (actually Kubuntu) 10.04 LTS as well.  One 
possiblity: I do not use Pulse audio, since my experience has shown that a 
more proper name would be pulse-but-no-audio.  It breaks just about 
everything if running.  Plain, old, ALSA generally gets along with 
anything.

I checked the config file and there is no explicit reference to sound.  I 
do have MIDI disabled, FWIW.

This may be a function of the Java runtime for all I know - Java and I 
generally do not get on well.
