The server code seems to lock /dev/dsp, not the UI.

Slackware 12.2 here.

The thing that wierded me out: having /dev/dsp open wasn't a problem
'till I had to start using udev.  Maybe there's some way to make udev
treat /dev/dsp as sharable?
