Lubrication: Wipe any dust from the rails that the head mount slides on. 
If the head then moves freely, nothing else needs be done. If there 
seems to be excessive friction, a drop of sewing machine oil or other 
light weight oil wiped onto the rails could help. Be sure to use the 
smallest amount possible.

Voltage checks: At the very least, make sure that there is voltage on 
the connector from the drive power supply to the drive circuit board. 
Likely voltages are +-5 and +-12 or 15v. Not much more can be said 
without a schematic for the drive.

RPM checks: The strobe can be used with any incandescent light bulb. 
Fluorescents probably won't work.

Alignment: This requires a special disk, an oscilloscope, and a service 
manual to do correctly. It is not something to try yourself unless you 
know what you are doing and can accept destroying your drive.

Do you have access to a digital camera for screen captures? If you are 
stuck with the screen capture programs, then you need picture editors 
that permit palette changes. If the original pictures were "artifact" 
colors, then you may be forced to run MESS to capture the images.
