The adapter would still require USB drivers to talk to :-)

I don't know anyone who has written a USB stack here, but hobbyists could use GNU or other open source licenses that a commercial entity could not do. At RadiSys Microware, we were not allowed to use GNU licensed items, but we could use ... NetBSD? One of them. The lawyers were concerned that bringing in GNU code could be challenged or something to end up requiring kernel source, etc. to be released since it would be "part of the system." They didn't get the concept of "modules," but said neither would a judge and jury :)
