Windows 95 was in response to BAD programmers writing horrible drivers and applications that made Microsoft look bad.
I long ago read a document that I wish I had saved called ~ "The Little Device Driver" that a MS person described how out of control Windows programming had developed into. The initial steps were described how this very serious problem was going to be attacked.
As the years have gone by I have seen a constant tightening of how and what Windows programmers are allowed to do.
16 Bit programs, GONE!
Unsigned Drivers, GONE!
Soon people wishing to turn UAC off will cry and need to install Windows 3.1 to be happy.
There may be cleaned up versions of "The Little Device Driver" on line, the original was very strong on how Microsoft was not going to take it any more and start to control what programmers can do and how they could do it.
