There is essentially no support for the Coco in MESS at this time. The only way 
to optimize MESS for the Coco is to compile it yourself and make source code 
changes as desired.
If you look at src/emu/bus/coco/cococart.c you will find that the default device 
is pak. I changed that to fdcv11. That should retain floppies with a cart mounted.

The slot device function is one of several that don't work correctly. You can 
try previous versions of MESS, working backwards until you find one where ORC-90 
works. However, then you won't have Drivewire functionality.

You can always make reports on the MAME testers site:
http://mametesters.org/
Just don't expect much in the way of a response. If you look at report 5291, you 
will see I reported the ORC-90 problem in 2013 and nothing has been done.
