For myself Steve I would go more of a bottom end Win 7 if it is
exclusively for
drivewire, Vista was a little buggy 7 is more stable. I use both Mac and PC
myself along with a slower Drivewire on a Raspberry Pi.

A system that will be slow with Windows will be a bit faster with Linux --
especially if you strip it down to just what you need. I'm running Mint 9
on a P3 laptop and it's speedy enough for everyday use. I tried later
versions of Mint and they were sluggish though, so Mint 9 is the highest
I'd go if you need a full fledged OS. Open Office is a bit slow, but
that's more to do with the P3 processor (900 MHz HP laptop). I forget what
version of Ubuntu Mint 9 is based on, but you can find that in Wikipedia.
Just like Windows, Linux needs more processor power as it matures. There
are versions of Linux that don't have everything you would want for
everyday computing (Mint has everything) that would be great for a
Drivewire server. You can use the Raspberry Pi version on a more powerful
machine too. Then you would have the convenience of a setup that works on
a more powerful processor. That should work with minimal changes anyway.
Or use something like Puppy Linux.
