Basically because I didn't do my homework!

It was 5 years ago, so the details are fuzzy. But IIRC I had CTS# hooked up 
to the flash CS# line; the problem being that (again IIRC) CTS# is not 
asserted on writes!?! I think that was one problem; there may have been 
others. Since the EPROM configuration worked, and I also designed another 
(better) variant in the same PCB run, I abandoned it fairly quickly.

Unfortunately the 2nd variant was flawed for (IIRC) the same reason. It is 
possible that it could be made to work as-is with some fancy CPLD 
programming (and I had a scheme in mind), but at the time I didn't have any 
means to save/load Coco software, so I shelved it.

Both these designs were quick hacks to fill a panel for another project, so 
I wasn't too fussed about it. One of these days I'll do a proper flash cart 
that can be programmed from the Coco. The idea was a cheap alternative for 
people who don't have a SuperDrive.
