A CNC machine is one of the things that an FPGA CoCo would be great
for. You get the simplicity and familiarity of the CoCo, plus about 10
times the speed of the original CoCo hardware. And if there is enough
free logic real estate left over after implementing the CoCo
functionality, one could add, e.g. a hardware math processor to the CoCo
design. A math module optimized for doing the kinds of calculations
needed in computing a tool path could be very fast on an FPGA. Putting
that under the control of an unencumbered system like the CoCo would be
the best of both worlds.
