Roger, do you need the Linux box to be a server?  Or would using it
as a client suffice?  A linux box (via samba) can be an excellent CIFS
(i.e.  Windows network filesystm) server, but it requires some amount
of configuration with tools that are less than intuitive.

If Linux as a client is fine, are you running KDE?  Or GNOME or
something else?  Konqueror (the KDE browser) can browse CIFS (aka SMB)
shares by itself.

Just open Konqueror (_not_ Firefox, Nautilus, etc) and use a url
like this:

	smb://windowsbox/share

That should work just fine.

If you need/want command line access, they you should 'man smbclient'.
The smbclient tool provides an ftp-like interface to CIFS shares.
