CoCo Max came with its own interface, if I recall,
that plugged in the cartridge slot. I think the
program itself may have worked without it (just kind
of crippled), and they may have supported the hi-res
interface. I am not sure. But I believe the interface
came out after CoCo Max.
Ah, here we go:

CoCo Max (1,2, and 3) were probably the most well
known graphic programs for the CoCo, and the CM3 file
format almost became a CoCo standard. CoCo Max 3
featured two 320x192 screens that could be linked to
form a giant 320x384 screen. The menus were easy to
use, as were the tools and textures. Using their own
hi-res interface, and later, the Tandy hi-res
interface, the joystick/mouse could access the entire
screen. CoCo Max featured undos, animation (color slot
flipping) fonts, slide shows, stamps, shrink/stretch,
rotate, zoom, lasso, etc. One feature that tickled
everybody was the color selecting. You can see all 64
colors on the screen at the same time, then you pick
the 16 colors you want for your palette.
