Michael, et al, the final issue of Rainbow (my test issue) is in .pdf 
format.  Scanned at 300 dpi in Photoshop, manipulated in 
GraphicConverter, then .pdf-ed with Acrobat 6.0.  The file is 8.97MB, 
and the quality is _very_ good, even better than the original yellowed 
newsprint.  I got the yellow out by scanning each page as line art, 
then converting the color pages to 32bit color in GraphicConverter.  
There has been some talk of 24bit color, but I don't seem to have that 
option, so I used 32bit in preference to my other choice, 16bit.

The press-ready .tif files from the scans were 32bit color and 1bit 
line art, depending on the page; the color .tifs (pages 1, 8, & 9) are 
45MB each, and the B&W .tifs are 2.2MB each.  Remember, these are 
11-3/8 x 15 inch pages (and that's how Acrobat outputs them!).

I have a copy of TextBridge Pro 8.5 on one of the machines; if I get 
some time, I will play with feeding the .tifs through that for OCR.  I 
have not had any success lifting text out of the new .pdf-ed volume, so 
the OCR will be a necessity for the program listings.
