That sounds odd... maybe your system hides file extensions too.
I've integrated Mac video editing sytems (Final Cut Pro, Media 100, Avid Media
Composer) and have had to download .hqx files for updates, among other things.
Audio files I saw had an AIFF extension. This was around OS8-8.5 (Mac OS9 was
out, but unsopported)
