Do the switches also change the spreading codes to the few that the FCC
restricts for Amateur Radio use? Or has the FCC removed that
restriction recently?

If not, then those devices can only be operated under their existing
licensing restrictions.

That has always been the sticking point for modifying off the shelf
spread spectrum stuff for Amateur Radio use. The vendors of it lock
their spreading codes in firmware, and were not willing to document how
to change them.

The Amateur radio operators have primary service on the microwave band
that the wireless routers operate on, the off the shelf wireless
internet routers have secondary service on the same frequencies.

Secondary service means that they are not protected from interference
from the primary service.
