There is a simple but nice utility called usbview .exe available for free 
download from Microsoft.  It will tell you the ID of any device plugged into your 
PC's USB bus.  Might be useful for some "research."

I don't know if there's any provision in the USB specs for random one-off 
devices, though ISTR hearing of a USB interface kit -- probably a demo card for a 
chip set.
