No worries Brian, it is a good question.

I think the biggest aspect for me is that this list doesn't seem to have a
'Let's Learn' culture. Instead of being one of exploration, of discovery, of
putting ideas out there, of not knowing...of admitting you don't know
something, this list is 'Solutions Based'. It seems here is where people
come to find definitive answers rather than explore what the questions are.
Research by its nature is about exploring unknown territories, about
investigation. I think this sets a different culture in the list from the
beginning.

At the same time, this trait of being an answers list is great. I've posted
questions on this list and got great responses. I can trust the responses
here too, because there are experienced designers and thoughtful academics.
It really is a list of experts in that respect and is quite helpful.

But another possible reason for the lack of discussion (well, it is for me)
is the fact that there are so many on this list that are from corporations
and possibly media etc that I feel that every post is a press release! It's
like having to dress up to go into your lounge room.

These are my quick thoughts. I'd be interested in any other views and I hope
this helps Brian.

Regards,
Christy

Just curious, Christy ... but was there a reason why you felt this
discussion couldn't take place in the ARG-SIG list? I say that with no
judgment, mind you, as I'm in the process of trying to set up a non ARG-SIG
list for commercial developers that is less ... um ... publicly archived.
Some of us sometimes feel like we have to keep our mouths a little shut (for
example, I have an ARG running now, and basically no where to discuss issues
that emerge from it, since the ARG-SIG list is too "public" to talk about
stuff that still needs to be hidden behind the curtain.)

So I'm just trying to collect a list of traits that the ARG-SIG list isn't
providing so was curious about your thoughts.

Best,

Hello All,

As many of you would be aware, I wrote the section on ARGs & Academia for
the whitepaper. Since I did that section there have been many other
researchers that have emerged and new ones that have started to look at the
area. There have also been many educators who have started looking at ARGs
as a pedagogical device for secondary and tertiary teaching and in the
public sector. Many have joined this list in the hope of some good
discussion and knowledge sharing. There hasn't been much conversation on
this list for some reason - I'm guilty of not participating in all the
researcher discussions too. But I do receive a lot of emails offlist from
researchers and educators wanting to talk further and gather information. It
is for this reason that I've started a new listserv for ARG researchers and
educators. Basically, I'm experimenting to see if a new list that is
dedicated to theoretical and pedagogical discussion will facilitate free
exchange. I hope the list is seen as being complementary to the current SIG
list and not a competitor since both can co-exist quite well. Indeed, the
fact that more specialised lists are needed is a sign that the area is
maturing. Hey, the new list may not even work as a conversation space
either...but I hope it does...because I'm keen to share and hear other
people's thoughts and knowledge. So, if anyone is interested in joining this
list feel free to signup. Also, non academics, designers etc are all welcome
to join! Anyone can join! In fact I sincerely hope you do, because
researchers and educators need the insights of those in the trenches and
researchers also want to output ideas that of value to designers. Here is
the link to sign up:

Also, please feel free to let me know your thoughts on the idea.

Regards,

Christy Dena
