Maybe you were using Papyrus Version 7.5? In any case, can you provide more details about what happens when you launch Papyrus and try to access your data? I assumed that it would overcome the few problems I had been having with the .16 version. Today I tried Text Extract and although the list is generated properly I get an error message saying: 'Unable to open scratch file TXT.TMP New text file deleted' The '.new' file does not have the citations updated, they are left in the '%%' format. There is a file created called TXT3.TMP. I tried renaming it to TXT.TMP but that didn't work and another TXT3.TMP was created. I also tried saving the document as a Word 6 version (I'm running Word 2000), but the same thing happened. I retried Papyrus version 16 but got the same error. It had worked previously on an earlier version of the same document when I was using Windows 98, I'm now on Windows XP Professional. Everything is loaded onto the same folder on my C: drive. I also get a problem at start-up, an error message along the lines of 'Having problems with device D:'. When I press ESC the database starts up fine. Any ideas? This may not be your issue but consider that .TMP files have some form of magic for XP. I suggest that you save to a file with a .txt extension instead. Also beware of loading Papyrus into the XP's "Program Files" directory. Traditionally it would be in C:\PAP but Windows 98 would have tolerated it in C:\Program Files\PAP WinXP on the other hand demands system administrator rights to create files in the C:\Program Files subdirectory, unless you deliberately assign permissions for vanilla users to modify particular directories. Depending on how your system is set up and what administrative policies are in effect, the whole of C:\ drive may have reduced permissions, denying you the ability to create files in anything other than your own area (basically your desktop and My Documents folders.) If that is the case, a call to your local friendly system administrator would be on the cards. Apols if this is stale news or otherwise unhelpful! Cheers, Denis (Perth, W. Date: Fri Apr 22 13:36:59 2005 Subject: [Papyrus-L] Text Extract 'scratch' file problem Message-ID: Thanks but it didn't help. Firstly, I have loaded Papyrus into c:\PAP. Secondly, I do have rights to create files & folders on the hard drive. Thirdly, I tried creating a .TXT rather than a .NEW file with Text Extract (although I wasn't sure how that might help). No difference. I don't know what a 'scratch' file does, other than it looks like an unformatted version of the beginning of the document I'm extracting from. There doesn't seem to be any previous emails about anything like this. I seem to be able to paste citations ok using NotePad, which appears to be the main problem that people have had with XP. Please, does anyone know why this is happening? I don't want to have to go through my Thesis changing each reference manually. :-( -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Neither the 'Having problems with device d:' nor the 'scratch file' error occur. I'd still like to know what a 'scratch' file is (and why my emails don't word wrap like other people's - I know it's very annoying to read). Sue From dave at ResearchSoftwareDesign.com Tue Apr 26 01:46:13 2005 From: dave at ResearchSoftwareDesign.com (Dave Goldman) Date: Tue Apr 26 01:44:44 2005 Subject: [Papyrus-L] Text Extract 'scratch' file problem In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: I found these bits of explanation buried in our support files: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAPYRUS needs to create a temporary file during some Text Extracts. It names this file TXT.TMP. _Where_ it tries to create the file depends on which version of PAPYRUS you're using. In older versions, PAPYRUS would try to place TXT.TMP in the directory containing your *.BIB files. In other versions it would always use C:\. Unless there is no C: drive, in which case later versions then turn to the current default directory. Finally, as of Version 7.0.11c, PAPYRUS first tries to use the directory listed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file via a statement of the form: SET TEMP=C:\whatever If such a statement exists, then it had better point to a real directory! If no such statement exists, then if there is a C: drive on your computer the current version of PAPYRUS will use C:\; otherwise it will stick to the current default directory. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- These days (which is to say, on Windows NT/2000/XP), environment variables such as TEMP might be set not in an AUTOEXEC.BAT file, but rather through the "System" control panel. So figure out where your TEMP variable is being set, and confirm that it points to a disk and directory actually available. Note: one way to quickly check the current setting of TEMP is to run the "MS-DOS Command Prompt". At the prompt inside the resulting window/screen, type SET (just those three letters, upper- or lower-case) and press Enter. All of your environment variables will be listed, in alphabetical order. (To dismiss the MS-DOS window/screen, type EXIT.) -- Dave Goldman (dave@ResearchSoftwareDesign.com) Research Software Design The PAPYRUS Bibliography System 617 SW Hume Street Portland OR 97219-4458 (U.S.A.) fax 503-452-8920 Technical Support: support@ResearchSoftwareDesign.com Other Questions: info@ResearchSoftwareDesign.com Web: http://www.ResearchSoftwareDesign.com/ From kovacs at ovrisc.mdche.u-szeged.hu Mon May 23 09:27:54 2005 From: kovacs at ovrisc.mdche.u-szeged.hu (kovacs@ovrisc.mdche.u-szeged.hu) Date: Mon May 23 09:27:59 2005 Subject: [Papyrus-L] Papyrus: input impossible In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Dear Papyrus Users, I recently encountered a most curious error: upon attempting to input a new reference manually, this was impossible, selection among the Types (article, book, chapter etc.) was not possible. This would be the 7 or 8 files with the extension ".BIB". (Reinstalling Papyrus should not disrupt data files, but it never hurts to take precautions!) Then go ahead and reinstall Papyrus.
