An air of insult?

It's as it suggests.

Anybody can write script. Not everybody can create a solution to a
business need. This book will help you....

I am not sure your concern over programs are well founded.

There are Perl Programs when you consider the use of PerlApp. It
creates an executable. Not in the traditional sense but it allows you
to run a script without installing Perl.

People are going to have misconceptions no matter what we do. We just
have to educate them.

Besides in the end it doesn't matter what we think. O'Reilly is going
to do what it wants.
