It's a bit dated, though, right?  Are there better ways of doing things 
now?  E.g. POE?  (Panther covers this very slightly)  Has anything 
changed in recent Perl's?

I'd rather see Mastering Perl aimed after Panther, which I personally 
found disappointing.  Advanced Perl != CPAN in my view.
