[LSC] Call for votes: standard Unofficial directory

Having read the thread it still doesn't change my prior view

While I agree that unofficial parts should go in their own sub-directory (and strangely enough I personally use a directory called "unofficial") I don't believe that this is something that the LSC should be standardising

So I vote "No"

Subject: [LSC] Call for votes: standard Unofficial directory

I'm going on the assumption that the other members of this committee have followed the LUGNET thread about standardizing an Unofficial directory starting here:

http://news.lugnet.com/cad/dev/mac/?n=768

If you haven't followed that thread, you should probably read the sub-tree of the thread linked above, and I apologize for prematurely placing a call for votes. Feel free to chime in here with discussion, and I'll postpone this call for votes.

--- Start of Proposal ---

A directory named Unofficial in the user's LDraw directory shall be the standard location for programs to look for (and optionally download to) unofficial parts. The Unofficial directory will have parts and p sub-directories, and these will mirror the structure of the standard parts and p directories.

--- End of Proposal ---

It should be noted that Unofficial does not follow the 8.3 naming convention that up until now has been used for all officially sanctioned LDraw files and directories. It is my opinion (and this seems to be shared by the people posting to the thread above) that this is not a problem, since any program supporting this directory will be a current program and as such won't have any problem dealing with long filenames.

If we do ratify this, I'm not entirely sure where to put it. I couldn't find any existing documents on ldraw.org that seemed appropriate. I suppose we could create a small document and add it to the specifications page.
