Salve Werner, *!
Have you aready heard about the OpenMoko/Neo1973 project?
If not see:
http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS2986976174.html
Since the fist smart phones I wish to have a GSM phone with
linux - not the close Linux phones from Motorola - a real
free open source mobile...
I was disapointed what less a user could do with such hardwarpower
comparable with early personal computers, disapointed by the
influence of GSM provider - caring more about Digital Right
Managment DRM (e.g. for the Siemens S55) then giving information,
support to developer... so I desided caring about smart phones
or java phones would be useless waste time - to much restricted
devices... and like most, I dreamed of a full hackable Linux
phone...
I hope you don't think now I would spam this list..
... because while I still dreamed I thought the time for a real
free small devices with Linux and GSM will be in some years,
maybe a PDA with a GSM modul...
But I was wrong. Sean had have this idea and he found some
very good team members and with FIC in TW a hardware company
which is standing now behind this project.
Seans anouncment from February 20th has a philosphical
view, based on Mark Weiser, who coined the term
"ubiquitous computing" but please read yourself:

I'm very active on the community mailinglist of Openmoko
since last November, and I do like to invite you to give
on the linux-laptop mailinglist, or on the openmoko mailinglist
feedback about your ideas, wishes for a free hackable Linux phone.
When you see the hardware details - the Neo1973 has a A-GPS chip
from global-local.com which allows to get localisation data even
in buidings!
Seans presentation of November worth a look:

On slide 6 you can see that Sean likes the power of apt-get install...
OpenMoko uses OpenEmbedded and the more ligthwight packet manager

And there is a chance to get a Neo1973 with a developer kit
for 350 US$ in March....
Excuse me, I haven't an official function with OpenMoko, I'm just
a student working with linux since years and I got several tips
from Werners page...
And I'm absoluty, total enthusiastic about this great project
OpenMoko/Neo1973 that I want to share this good news with you :)
I think OpenMoko/Neo1973 will redundantise the need for a laptop
in several cases...
mobil computer + linux + GSM + GPRS + AGPS + Bluetooth
has much potential :))))
Happy hacking ;)
