So, lets put some traffic on the list :)
It seems UBUNTU is unable to write DVDs in laptops right now.
Checking at some places, it seems other distros have the same problem.
Mine is a Satellite A75 from Toshiba. The cdrecord command says
everything was all right, the DVD surface seems burned well, but putting
the DVD in any drive says it is blank....
No problem with CDs.
