I'm experiencing the same w/ a Dell Latitude D810 running FC3. No sound when
playing CD from GNOME or KDE's cd players w/ default settings whereas sound
levels seem normal and other playback is fine.

The only way to got it workign was using KsCD or XMMS' libcdread/libcdaudio
plugins in digital audio extraction mode instead of direct analog mode. Would
it work for you too?

I wonder if it matters, but I'm not able to turn on DMA to /dev/hdb (the
cd/dvd player), due to a lack of atapi support in the ata support in kernel
(2.6.12 from FC3), which seems a classical issue w/ recent laptops that have
sata controllers to serve atapi cd/dvd drives. I wonder if this is related..

Regards,
