Hello from Adam in NYC, USA

If you are using most modern USB addon cards and USB enclosures using up to date Linux, you should not have any problems. If you have an oportunity, test it first if you access to the hardware.

My expierence has been with past SuSE 9.x and SuSE 10 and two diverse laptops. Try to get the newest version of Linux if at all possible.

There is a near hangup hotplug behavior with SUSE 9.x where you will see a lot of CPU activity in the process monitor. I think it is due to the udev processes.

The current version of SuSE 10 does it quickly. YMMV.
