well, i just had a glance at one of these machines and i also did not
spot a switch. some time has passed since i configured such a machine
but as far as i can remember, i never fiddled around with rfswitch. it
just always worked. if you do not want an enabled wireless radio,
unload the driver. you should load the module asus_acpi and then you can
  echo 1 > /proc/acpi/asus/wled
to enable the LED. if tools like iwconfig tell you that the radio is off,
then perhaps you will find something in /proc/acpi/asus.

recent verions of the ipw* drivers offer you a possibility to watch the
state of the rf-kill in /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw2100/*/rf_kill (at least
for ipw2200, i guess it is the same for you). the numbers mean:

0 = RF kill not enabled (radio on)
1 = SW based RF kill active (radio off)
2 = HW based RF kill active (radio off)
3 = Both HW and SW RF kill active (radio off)

SW = Software
HW = Hardware

i guess you can toggle the SW based kill there.

hth,
 Sebastian
