The program supports centers associated with particle physics research groups at universities and labs nationwide. A variety of activities take place depending on the number of years a center has been active. Activities include summer research appointments, professional development workshops, instructional materials development, a sustainable long-term "physics alliance" program, and research appointments for a small number of high school students. The goal is to bring the teachers and their students into the research community so that students learn fundamental physics as they analyze live online data and participate in inquiry-oriented investigations. DUTIES: As one of four national QuarkNet staff members, lead and operate the national QuarkNet education program, focusing on supporting high school teachers and physicist mentors at 13 centers in the Western US including Hawaii. Partner with other QuarkNet staff across the country to co-organize, execute and evaluate programmatic activities including a focused and effective inquiry-oriented program at the annual one-week QuarkNet Teacher Institute in late June, mentor activities, regional and national teacher "reunions," and presentations and workshops for professional meetings. Visit 13 QuarkNet centers to help plan and observe and evaluate their local programs. Improve the information flow between staff and centers and individuals. Mentor teachers to use inquiry-oriented activities and investigations in their classrooms. In workshops, lead/demonstrate activities as examples of inquiry (modeled on scientific research) and/or lead a "research lesson" type of lesson-planning. Visit teachers in their classrooms. Help recruit new centers, funding permitting. Visit several universities each year after they express interest in joining the program and explain the program setting expectations and answering questions. Work closely with staff to develop and pilot materials for professional development activities (for the program, for AAPT workshops, etc.) and classrooms including online materials and projects. Work closely with participants to adapt and develop materials for programs at the centers. Outside of QuarkNet duties, participate in development of educational materials, including websites and charts on particle physics and astrophysics/cosmology, for the Particle Data Group. Answer email questions from students, teachers, and the general public visiting the Particle Adventure website and our other websites. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: BS or BA degree. Several years high school physics teaching experience and/or workshop/program leadership. Ability to travel extensively. Ability to work with high school teachers and university/lab researchers. NOTE: This is a on-going full-time opportunity to start in August 2004.
