With the recent ?discovery? that some ?FreeSync? monitors will work with
a CoCo 3 with just a cable, David Ladd did a test to see if the FreeSync
monitor he already had would work with the MM/1 ? and it does. How long
has this been a thing? Why are we inventing adapters and FPGAs and PI
based converters if monitors exist? :)
I have a cable on the way, and will be taking a CoCo 3 down to Best Buy
to go through their FreeSync monitors (if they allow) to see which ones
work. I?ll try to create a document or web page with this information
(maybe CoCopedia.com <http://cocopedia.com/> is a good spot).
We assume if it works on the CC3, it will work on the MM/1. I?ll find
that out at some point when I dig mine out of storage.
More on this shortly...

I tried looking up FreeSync specs and didn't find much. It's an AMD
technology designed to work with newer Nvidia chip graphics cards. AMD
doesn't require a license, so it's getting popular. The monitor
electronics "talks" to the graphics card and syncs the best refresh
rate. Apparently the monitor side will detect the sync type and rate of
the graphics input even if the graphics card does not have the nvidia
chip set. That only makes sense, otherwise the monitor would REQUIRE an
nvidia graphics card and the monitor maker would be less inclined to use
it in their monitors. I was looking to see what the minimum refresh rate
was but couldn't find it. Obviously low enough for the CoCo and Amiga.
Not all monitors may sync that low though.
