The ubuntu system is sitting here beside me, but it's not as handy for 
quick tests.

-C was the ticket.  BAD ROM checksum.

I grabbed a ROM image from elsewhere and got it working.

I think there should be a way to override the checksum, in case folks 
want to mod the ROM image.
