In a lot of cases going Windows 10 would be a good route, but here are some

Some of the Altera tools for the DE-1 dev board used in the CoCo3FPGA will
not work with Windows 10 and will cause Windows 10 to blue screen.  This
software has not been updated and now Intel has Altera and still hasn't
updated the software for Windows 10.

Some EPROM programmers and other specialty devices like that also wont work
under Windows 10.  Now I know you will probably say just buy updated
devices or hardware, but a lot of us just don't have money to throw around
to upgrade everything to work with Windows 10.

Now with that said.  Doing a full clean install of Windows 7 and doing all
the updates can take a while.  That is true, but if you get that done and
then use a software like Macrium Reflect to do a FULL HDD image of and
store that image on a NAS or other USB drive.  Then you can at a later time
restore that image back to that system if you have to replace the HDD or
SSD to the day you created the image.

I use to do this all the time with Windows XP and Windows 7.  Normally I
would redo my system and restore from that image.  Do all the updates that
had come out since the image and then make a new image.

I have a Acer dual core netbook that I still run Windows 7 on just for the
Altera and Xilinx software as well as the EPROM programmer that I have.

Plus I know people that run their businesses off of some software tools
that also will not run in Windows 10 and the original programmer is
well....dead.

So that just gives a few of my thoughts on why you would still need to run
Windows 7, XP, or even 98SE.
