That article alone was worth reading.  It had a note about how to use alcohol to moisten the cleaning surface before cleaning disk heads.  I had completely forgotten about that lost maintenance task...

Sorry for the off topic subject matter.  One of the guys I work for asked if I could make a clone of a hard drive in a PDP-11.  I don't know much about it other than it looks like a MFM drive.  I don't know what system is installed either.  Anybody had any experience with this?
