I was running LUBUNTU because I figured that since it's so lean it would make it faster but I was wrong. I installed Ubuntu 14 and found the Intel Atom seems to be able to run this OS using less resources than Lite Ubuntu.
Also using the LXDE desktop (https://lxde.org/) instead of Gnome or Unity made a noticeable improvement. Xfce runs well but is not really needed if you are using the compute stick as a emulator. I only use the desktop to switch between emulator apps. (vcc,Dosbox,retro arch) so the bare bones LXDE is the obvious choice
