 From my perception, it is easier to wreck the socket if the proper chip puller is not used. I have heard of people using small screwdrivers, but I would never recommend that, especially if you have not logged many (many) hours successfully extracting PLCCs with screwdrivers. An investment of $5 - 10 USD (and maybe even less if you really shop around) can avoid a much (much) greater headache.
