Thank you all for your great ideas!

I am going to think about it for a couple days and come up with a new
design.

I like the am/fm transmitter/receiver ideas because is closer to the rails
on how things work... as opposed to using an off the shelf component that
does all in one.

Because you are trying to make the system work at distance of about 5 feet
you can try:
1) Reduce the sensitivity of the receiver
2) Turn down the volume control of the receiver
3) Use a squelch circuit
