Aaron, echo is disabled in the current drivers and has been for a while (since 3.3.0 release or before). It's the very reason I encourage everyone to use 3.3.0 and not the 3.2.9 that seems to show up constantly.

This happens when the /N device has echo enabled.  Every time inetd sends acommand, it's getting its own command echoed back as input and beingconfused.It's been a while..the device nodes are supposed to be built with theproper options so echo isn't enabled but every so often that seems to getbroken.  Maybe somebody can confirm whether this is a problem with currentofficial images?  You may want to use a standard image if you are not nowin case it's just a problem with the disk you use now.I think there is a way to permanently change options like echo (calledeko?)
