I did the same thing with Ethernet years back, though it would have really needed an RS232 pack to do anything fast. It was an interesting, very cheap experiment to get pretty much anything going on a CoCo, just at slow serial speeds. But, that's the fastest we ever could do anything other than hard drives back then anyway.

It just keeps getting cheaper. Now, less than $10 bucks can do something like this.
