Tried using all non-toll roads once. If you have an extra couple hours to spare go for it! After a 14 hour drive just to get to Chicago I said "never again!". Takes at least an hour to get through Chicago then was about another hour on to Elgin... 16 hours total. Coming from south of Chicago is better than east, but you still have to go a good bit out of the way to avoid toll roads. A few bucks is worth the hour or so saved! Toll roads aren't put in inconvenient places...
