That sounds like a good way to go about it and keep things the same between the two,
but looking at the DE2 user manual schematics, they use a DM9000A and about 25 IO pins.
We wouldn’t have enough pins to replicate that interface unfortunately. We could do just a transceiver
or a Ethernet controller with a serial interface like the ENC424J600 or similar..
