Camillus, if you're getting an ERROR 249, then most likely, you're trying to read an RSDOS disk or a different sized OS9 disk. RSDOS and OS9 disks are formatted differently and cannot (natively) read each other's disks... or.... you are trying to read a DSDD 720k 80trk disk in a DSDD 360k 40trk drive...
I have no idea what your drive descriptors are set for as this determines what type disks you can use. I find the best solution is to use 720k 80trk descriptors as they will read/write the 40trk disks where a 40trk descriptor can not read an 80trk disk.
You can always change the descriptors on the fly with dmode.

Drive descriptors can get confusing, especially when you are not familiar with how it all works. But basically:

80trk 720k DSDD will read most any DSDD disk (80, 40, & 35 trk)
40trk 360k DSDD will read 40 & 35 trk DSDD
35trk DSDD & SSDD will only read 35 trk DSDD & SSDD

So using 80trk descriptors will usually read most OS9 disks.
How do you tell the difference in the disk images on your PC? Just look at the actual file size of the image on your PC. It will be "close" to one of the above sizes.
There is no way to tell if a disk is OS9 or RSDOS but to try to read it. RSDOS disk images are 'almost' always 35trk SSDD (158k). It's rare, but there are some 40trk SSDD images floating around. Standard RSDOS (or RGBDOS/HDBDOS) will not read the extra tracks on these images without modifying the rom. ADOS will read them when set for 40trk.
