Here's an interesting article that some of you might like to read. Many feel that the 8-bit MCU is dead but this article shows otherwise.  It's a little slanted toward the Microchip and Atmel controllers but it makes some good points.  The 8-bit platform is still alive and kicking and probably will be for a long time.  It's unfortunate that some of the big CPU producers of yesteryear (like Motorola) have pretty much dropped out of the game.

Some of the points mentioned here even apply to our little 6809 which, although it is no longer in production, lives on in synthesized form.
