I believe that some anti-virus programs and some browsers will oversee 
your browsing activities and prevent you (or at least caution you 
strongly) from visiting a site that is deemed dangerous.  There are 
still a whole bunch of Windows XP computers running out there and many 
are connected to the internet and I'm not saying they're not getting 
infected but a lot of it depends on what websites you visit and which 
browser you use and whether you understand a security threat. I 
personally still have one computer that is running XP and feel safe 
using it knowing that it could be more vulnerable and that it's not 
being 'protected' by Microsoft updates. But perhaps for an uneducated 
person who is not wise to the pitfalls of the internet the story may be 
different.
