When I started using email and other forms of electronic communication the rule of the day
was that with written communictaion that emoticons should be used to indicate humor, etc.
The rule of the day was that when it's possible to take something in more than one way to
take it in the most pleasant and innocent way.

Helps to prevent hurt feelings and flame wars.
