Inspired by the recent "Worst games ever" thread I decided to try some of these games. I stink at most games but if the game already stinks, maybe that's alright?

So, first on the menu, Castle Tharoggad.

Ok, first. I don't even want to talk about DofD. I know this was declared to be the successor to DoD and I love DoD but I stink at it.

First there's the awkward mouse interface. Mostly awkward at the time just because it was different. Now I call it awkward mostly because it doesn't support the hi-res mouse adapter. It tends to ignore your clicks when it's not your turn, something else gamers weren't used to. I kind of prefer it. I tend to madly click attack, then realize I should move and click a move about the time my turn comes up. So I move instead of standing there and getting killed!

Which leads me to the heatbeat. I don't care for the heatbeat mechanism. Didn't like it in DoD and I don't like it in CT. I'd much rather have a hard number of hit points to watch over.

The actions are very limited. Not a lot of complexity there.

The graphics aren't that great. The game certainty doesn't push the coco3 to it limits there. That said the happy smiley monsters do amuse me. A little shading would have gone a long way...

The real kick in the pants is its idea of saving the game: "here write down these numbers for me!"  Wow. At least it saved some effort for whoever patched CT to run from disk, they didn't have to try to patch in a disk routine. :-)

So, as a stand-alone intro-to-role-playing game? Not totally horrible. A tolerable way to burn a few hours. Worthy sequel to DoD? Never in a million years!
