When I got my hands on an Apple 2 in school, I had already been using a VIC-20 (and maybe a CoCo by then). They had a different feel to them.
I was annoyed that some magazine I had, Family Computing or something, would do cross platform listings and never did good music for the CoCo version. BUT, they had an assembler music routine for the Apple versions. Without that, the Apple just made "beep beep" noises too. I am curious how the Apple 2 handled audio. Graphics-wise, they didn't seem much better.
They were the #1 BBS system in Houston, though (82-84 when I lived there). I wrote some voting booth routines and stuff for SysOps buy beyond that and school, I never had much exposure to them.
THis is why I am real curious to follow John Linville's exploration in to the world of Apple 2. It will be interesting to hear his opinions when he's done hacking.
