I'm the same way. The only thing I have running is "Spybot" and I've used it for 6 or 7 years. It's a very small TSR that uses very little CPU. It let's me know when anything tries to write to the registry and asks for verification. I run an admin account with no other accounts and have the windows firewall off as my router and isp both have firewalls. I've only encountered 2 "bots" in 15 years that caused me to reformat my system and they could've been avoided had I done what I knew I should've done. Most people's computers I cleared of "spyware", "adbots", and "malware" was due to porn sites, coupon sites (the worst) and ironically, legit manufacturer's sites that unknowingly hire these "internet ad specialists" who produce the cookies and ad bots that plague everyone.
Knowing what to do when encountering ad ware has a lot to do with it. I also know how to remove most adware and adbots when one does slip through.

When I bought this computer a few years ago, it had Norton installed from the factory. I started the computer the first time with no internet connection, Norton told me as soon as it started up that it had just blocked 27 viruses from invading my computer from the internet and that I needed to upgrade Norton to stop more of these.. I figured either they were real smart viruses to be able to jump through an unplugged internet connection or Norton was just lying to get the upgrade money. I went straight to the control panel and uninstalled Norton, then went through the registry and deleted any reference to Notron as well. My computer then booted and ran faster.

Man I have said this before, but I have been on the internet/on-line 
since the BBS days, but I have never had my PC "attacked", had a program 
crash my machine to the point where I had to reinstall the OS, I have 
always used an admin account on a windows pc as my main account(same on 
my current macbook).  My current router has a firewall, on it, but I am 
not getting attacked.  Maybe I am just lucky, but I doubt that.  I think 
I have had 3 viruses or malware on any of my machines, and none have 
gotten past my antivirus software.

But if anyone is interested I am currently uploading the unzipped 
coco_archive.zip file a website.
