I'm sure persistence plays a part but I would be inclined to find a more 
"intact" copy of the software. Looking at the font fault as well, I'd 
say there is something dodgy with your copy.

Diagnostic rule of thumb...

Try eliminate all the other inconsistency's and modifications before 
deriving to a conclusion.

He's running a standard CRT CM8 monitor, not a long persistent one. The 
likelihood of a faulty GIME is slim. But the software... that looks screwed.

Get another known working copy of the software and try again.
