I gave it a try - no dice.  Perhaps one of the chips is just bad itself.

I saw a FD-501 pak on eBay over the weekend and bought it.  I hope it works
(it's sold "as is").  From some reading, it looks like it has gold-plated
instead of tin contacts, at least.
