A VDG replacement was never going to be cheap; you only need to look at 
the GODIL PCB to see what's involved. As well as voltage translation you 
also need power supplies for the FPGA, and on this generic product you 
also have logic for user options.

I'm not overly familiar with Xilinx-brand FPGA's and their capacities, 
but I'm guessing you'd get a good chunk of the whole Coco in there, not 
just the VDG... so...
