Doh.  What about some other syntax that essentially nops but makes it easy
to leave arbitrary bytes in the buffer?
I vaguely remember the discussion you mention, probably where the idea came
from.  Don't recall what came of it.  I believe Brett is hiking for another
month or two so might not be available for comment.
