I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the black text on white 
background a problem.

I have a RGB monitor but could never understand the thinking behind this 
color combination.

It's too glare'y for me. It's not even "retro".

First thing I do is add the DISPLAY command into the startup and revert 
to a green (or yellow) text on black background.

I have also found white (or cyan) on a dark blue (RGB color 1) to look good.

Sometimes, it's the little things that can create (or destroy) a good 
impression to an outsider.
