The RT-N66U is an excellent router hardware-wise, but the firmware leaves a lot to be desired. Tomato has a lot of options and has been rock solid, even locking out remote access from the wireless and WAN side with a couple checkboxes.

After having problems with consumer routers tho (I'm running numerous IP Cameras) I decided to switch to more 'industrial' brands. Currently I'm using ubiquiti equipment and its been rock solid so far. There are a few brands (ubiquiti, engenius, etc.) in the WISP market which compete very well price wise with the prosumer brands and I'd suggest people at least take a look at them. They are a little harder to setup than your standard consumer router, but they tend to be more reliable. I haven't had to touch my router once since I set it up and that was over 6 months ago;I can't say that for any consumer router I've owned. I've also found that investing in descent network switches (I use HP Procurve currently) and quality cabling can help a lot too. Stay away from those $10 switches available at the big box stores and your network (and sanity) will thank you.

You can also pick up used Cisco gear quite cheaply on evilbay. I'd
trust a $20, 10 year old Cisco router over anything you can buy new at
BestBuy. They do require more knowledge to set up, but they never
die.
